Detente Period
This crisis has enabled there to by future agreements between the Soviet Union and United States ultimately leading to the Détente period in 1970. Détente is a term used that means to ease tensions especially political which lead to treaties such as the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty. This treaty aimed to restrain the arms race and danger of nuclear holocaust by limiting the number of nuclear missiles each nation had (A&E Television Networks, 2015). The Cuban Missile Crisis was important first steps towards the control of nuclear weapons as the two superpowers understood the dangers of nuclear Warcraft.
Lawrence Freedman a British Professor of War Studies at King’s College London wrote in 2014 that, ‘A gradual rapprochement between the United States and the Soviet Union was speeded up by the Cuban Missile Crisis, which vividly illustrated the dangers of nuclear confrontation.’ (A&E Television Networks, 2015) The highly commended professor also acknowledges the fact that the Cuban Missile Crisis played a vital role in opening communication between the Soviet Union and United States. The identification of the importance to control of nuclear weapons ensuring the safety of the world.

‘Hands across the sea’ is a propaganda poster released in the 1970s which origin cannot be found illustrates the opening up of communication between United States and Soviet Union (Cubanmissilecrisis.org, 2015). The cartoon depicts a hand called ‘American People’ and ‘Soviet’ exchanging a hand shake however cuffed to the Soviet hand is another hand called people. By having the two hands shaking each other show the open passage in the communication between the United States and the Soviet Union. In addition, this cartoon is bias towards capitalism as it contrasts the two ideologies showing Soviet negatively. Both these sources shows the vital role the Cuban Missile Crisis played in starting communication leading to reducing tensions of the superpowers. Due to the Cuban Missile Crisis the dangers of Nuclear War became visible. This led to the leaders starting to actively communicate to ensure world safety.
